Chimerem Okoroji Leads Gophers at Jack Johnson Classic

Minnesota junior Chimerem Okoroji won the 60-meter dash in record fashion at the Jack Johnson Classic on Saturday at the University Fieldhouse. Okoroji led four Golden Gopher event champions at the event.
Okoroji ran her two fastest 60-meter races of her Gopher career on Saturday. She first set the Jack Johnson record with a career best time of 7.46 seconds in the prelims; a time that ranks third in Minnesota history. She then won the event with a time of 7.50 seconds. Okoroji has captured the 60-meter titles in three straight meets to open the 2011 season.
Senior Nikki Swenson won the title in the mile run in one of the most exciting races of the day. Swenson passed Iowa’s Betsy Flood on the final lap then held on to win in a time of 4:46.62.
Stephanie Price competed in her first race on the track in her first competition since earning cross country All-America honors last fall. Price won the 3,000 meters in a time of 9:38.37. Missa Varpness was second in a time of 9:39.23.
Katie Hill led a Gopher sweep of the top three places in the 800 meters. Hill finished in 2:12.14, followed by Jamie Dittmar in 2:14.51 and Jamie Vandenberg in third in 2:15.68.
Caty Dongoske topped the Gopher performance on Saturday in the field events. Dongoske placed second in the weight throw with a personal-best effort of 56-6 3/4, the fifth-best throw in school history. Also placing second for the Gophers was Natalie Devine in the high jump with height of 5-6 1/2.
