Gophers and Badgers Tie; UW Wins Shootout

1/29/2011 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

The No. 4 University of Minnesota women's hockey team battled back twice and tied No. 1 Wisconsin to walk away with a 2-2 tie, tonight in Madison, Wis. Although the Golden Gophers tied the game, Wisconsin won the shootout to earn an extra point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings. With the tie, the Gophers are now 18-6-2 overall and 13-6-2 in conference action. Minnesota is also 1-0-2 in the overtime stanza and 1-1 in the shootout this season.

Meghan Duggan got the Badgers on the board early when she scored a power-play goal at 2:08 in the first period. The Badgers scored one goal on two power-play shots for the 1-0 lead after one.

Sarah Davis tipped in a Sam Downey shot from the point to tie the game at 1-1. Davis scored at 1:31 in the second period. Kelly Terry also held the second assist. However, Mallory Deluce helped the Badgers take another lead at 14:46 to put the game at 2-1 after two. The Badgers outshot Minnesota, 18-6 in the second, with Gopher goalie Noora Raty making 17 saves.

Minnesota responded and tied the game at 1:16 in the third with Kelly Terry scoring her 12th goal. Davis won the draw in the Wisconsin zone. She picked up the puck after her win, batted it to Terry, who was waiting at the back door for a nearly empty-net goal. It was Davis' 17th assist of the season. The two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the game, but the game remained 2-2 and headed into overtime. Raty made some fantastic saves, including some crucial ones during the Gopher penalty kill to stuff the Badgers.

Both teams went scoreless in the overtime period, but not without attempts. In the last 50 seconds, Amanda Kessel had a shot that just went wide, while Wisconsin's Meghan Duggan's shot rang off the post.

With each team earning a point in the conference standings, both played for an extra point in the shootout. UW's Brooke Ammerman shot first and scored. Kessel's attempt was stopped by Badgers goalie Alex Rigsby, while Duggan scored to go up, 2-0. Sarah Erickson scored on the shootout to put it at 2-1. Brianna Decker added the final blow to score the third goal for a 3-1 shootout win and the extra point.

Minnesota and Wisconsin will battle again tomorrow night at 7:07 p.m. The game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
