Alaska Anchorage (8-13-3, 7-11-2 WCHA) 1, Minnesota (11-10-3, 8-8-2 WCHA)
January 29, 2011
Minneapolis, Minn.
Minnesota Head Coach Don Lucia
On the game:
“They kept four guys back all night. In the first period, I think we didn’t adjust to it real well. We tried to make a few too many plays. ... I thought off the bat in that second period, we had a lot of good looks, assisted shots and plays around the net. We just couldn’t get it in. Their goaltender (Chris Kamal) played very well.”
On the Gophers’ struggles on the offensive end:
“You’ve just got to keep putting pucks in the net. Nate Condon had a breakaway. We had some good looks tonight, some pucks lying around there, but you’ve got to give credit to the goaltender. He played extremely well and they battled in front of him hard, especially once they got the lead. Kent (Patterson) did his job, let in one. Defensively we got the job done. … We just couldn’t score. We kept getting power plays going in the last two periods. It would have been nice to have some chances to get something going on the power play, but it was going to be a grinding-type game, just how we knew they were going to play.”
Alaska Anchorage Head Coach Dave Shyiak
On the game:
“I’ve said all year long, we’ve got a great bunch of kids. They care for one another. They play hard. For whatever reason last night, we didn’t have it. Tonight, we kind of saw what we’re made of. We played a good strong team game. We were smart with the puck. We didn’t give up any odd-man rushes. We gutted it out and had some great goaltending by Chris Kamal.”
On the reason for putting Chris Kamal in goal rather than Rob Gunderson:
“I just think Gunderson has played a long string of games right now, and obviously we didn’t win the last three games. He’s been playing well for us, but it was more of a mental break. Chris has worked hard in practice and he certainly deserved the start tonight. He played outstanding and got the job done.”
