The Golden Gophers saved their best for last, turning in a 7-under-par round on the final day of the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic. Minnesota moved up two spots to finish in fourth place overall with a score of 872 (+8). Erik Van Rooyen turned in an impressive 5-under 67, the lowest round by a Gopher this season, and finished sixth individually.
Three Golden Gophers played under par over the final 18 holes, and three finished in the top 20. Van Rooyen knocked down an eagle on the par-5 15th, and also made five birdies to just two bogeys. This was his first top-10 finish of the season. Robert Bell recorded three birdies to go 3-under on the day. He finished 13th. The third Gopher under par today was David Haley Jr., who shot a 71 and finished tied for 29th place. Jon Trasamar finished 12th overall, posting a 74 today. Tim Peterzen (t-36th) shot a 75.
By moving up two spots from sixth, Minnesota brought its head-to-head record up over .500 (25-23-1). The Gophers' 8-over total is their best tournament score to par this season. North Florida (-9) kept its lead from yesterday to win the tournament. East Carolina's Harold Varner also held onto his lead, winning medalist honors by one stroke over Chattanooga's Steven Fox.
The Gophers' final event of the fall is the Kiawah Invitational (Oct. 30-Nov. 1). They will then have a season break until Big Ten Matchplay on Feb. 10 and 11.
