After one of their best team performances in the past few years, the Golden Gophers' next tournament is the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, hosted by N.C. State. The first two rounds will be played Monday, Oct. 3, with a shotgun start. The final round will follow on Tuesday.
Traveling for Minnesota will be Robert Bell, Erik Van Rooyen, David Haley Jr., Jon Trasamar, and Tyler Lowenstein. The Gophers tied for third at the Fighting Irish, and Bell's individual fifth-place finish earned him Co-Big Ten Player of the Week honors. He leads the team with a 72.66 stroke average this fall. The Gophers will try to build on the success they had last week.
"I think we have three players right now that are riding a wave of confidence," head coach John Carlson said, noting in particular Haley's final round that solidified the Gophers' third-place finish.
Minnesota had a two-week break between its first two tournaments. The Gophers have a quicker turnaround this time, which meant a smaller window for practice and academics, but Carlson believes that his team will be ready to compete.
The course: Lonnie Poole Golf Course has a par of 71 and plays at 7,358 yards. The course was designed by the Arnold Palmer Design Company. Course features include difficult roughs and oddly shaped bunkers.
The field: Besides the Gophers, Boston College, Campbell, Davidson, East Carolina, Elon, James Madison, Louisiana-Lafayette, Memphis, N.C. State, Penn State, Richmond, Seton Hall, Texas State, UNC-Greensboro, and Western Carolina will be competing. N.C. State won last year's event, with the Wolfpack's Albin Choi taking medalist honors as a freshman.
Notes: Bell is the first Gopher to be named Big Ten Player of the Week since Bronson La'Cassie in 2007Ć¢ā¬Ā¦Minnesota will have a week off before its next tournament, the Auto Trader Classic in Duluth, Ga., Oct. 17-18.
