Minnesota's Haley Spencer Wins Silver at Pan American Games

Haley Spencer, a member of the Minnesota women's swimming and diving team, took home the silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:29.30 Thursday night as part of Team USA at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Canada's Ashley McGregor took home Gold in the event by posting a time of 2:28.04.
Spencer qualified for the Women's Final A earlier in the evening by placing second in the preliminary heat 2 with a time of 2:29.51, only 0.19 seconds behind McGregor who placed first in the heat by clocking in at 2:29.32.
Fellow Golden Gopher Ashley Steenvoorden also represented Minnesota and the United State at the Pan Am Games, placing eighth in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:20.51 in the Women's Final A Monday night. Steenvooden posted a time of 4:19.16 to place second in the preliminary heat 3 earlier in the day to qualify for the A Final.
The pair of Minnesota swimmers were not the only ones representing the Golden Gophers on Team USA, as men's and women's head coach Kelly Kremer serves as an assistant coach for the USA Women's Team at the Pan Am Games.
Spencer and Steenvoorden both earned their spots on the roster with impressive performances at the ConocoPhillips National Championships in August. Spencer finished second by only .03 seconds in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.09) after finishing sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.64). Steenvoorden won the 400 freestyle (4:07.63) and added a fifth-place finish in the 800 free (8:36.83).
The Minnesota women's swimming and diving team hosts Kansas Friday afternoon at 4 p.m., in a non-conference dual meet at the University Aquatic Center.
