The Gopher women’s golf team is coming off of the greatest fall season in program history and after the first round of the UCF Challenge on Sunday, the Gophers look as if they will continue the dream season. Minnesota combined to shoot an even par 288 on the 6,319 yard RedTail Golf Course in Sorrento, Fla. and will head into Monday’s second round four shots off the lead.
Tulane leads the event following on opening-round 284, one shot better than Coastal Carolina. The host Central Florida Golden Knights are in third at 286 while the University of Kentucky is fourth at 287.
Senior Teresa Puga paced the Gophers on Sunday with a two-under par 70, her second-lowest 18-hole score of the 2010-11 season, and is in a six-person tie for sixth place. Puga entered the spring season as the Gophers’ lowest scorer in program history.
Fellow senior Mary Narzisi and freshman Banchalee Theinthong are amongst a group of 10 players in 14th place at even-par while Samantha Sommers is two shots over par and in a tie for 35th. Jackie Shepherd, playing the event as an individual, opened with a 78 and Michele Edlin carded an 80.
