RIVERSIDE, CALIF. - The Golden Gophers softball team picked up its first win of the season this morning after beating Rutgers 9-3. In the first game of the aTen Construction Tournament, the Gophers jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and never looked back.
The offensive attack was lead by Malisa Barnes, who went 2-2 with a double, a home run, drew two walks, and got hit by a pitch. The Gophers scored three runs in the second, one in the third, another in the fourth, and broke the game open in the sixth after posting four more runs. Nine runs scored on eight hits for the Gophers.
Rutgers had many opportunities to take over the lead but were shut down by strong defensive and great pitching. The Scarlett Knights would leave seven stranded with Sarah Moulton pitching all seven innings giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out seven.
The Gophers are now 1-4 and will continue play this afternoon versus UC-Riverside.
