The Minnesota softball team fell in the Spartan Classic finals on Sunday afternoon, losing 1-0 to Kansas in the tournament finale. The loss snapped Minnesota's five-game winning streak, which was the longest streak for the Gophers dating back to the 2008 season.

With a scoreless tie stretching to the seventh inning, scoring chances were rare on Sunday afternoon in Greensboro. In the game's first six innings, Kansas had the best chance to break the tie when the Jayhawks loaded the bases with one down only for Laura Vickers hit into an inning-ending 5-2-3 double play.3`

The Jayhawks would eventually get on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh when Ashley Newman singled to third base with one out and then scored on a long double to left field by Marissa Ingle for the game's only run. Ingle would advance to third on a single by Mariah Montgomery, but Dorle caught Ingle in a rundown for the inning's second out and then Moulton tallied the third out when she struck out leadoff hitter Rosie Hull. However, the damage had been done, and after three outs in the bottom of the seventh, Kansas picked up the win.

For Minnesota, Malisa Barnes and Bree Blanchette each went 1-for-3 at the plate to tally Minnesota's two hits. Sara Moulton took the loss, dropping her record to 6-5 on the season. The freshman pitched all seven innings, striking out nine and walking one batter with seven hits and one run against. Kristin Martinez pitched a complete game shutout for Kansas, striking out five with one walk while allowing just two hits.

Minnesota returns to action next weekend at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.
