Kessel Named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week

The WCHA has awarded Amanda Kessel the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week honors after her performance against St. Cloud State last weekend. It is the fourth weekly award this season for Kessel and her first WCHA Offensive Player of the Week honor this year. Overall, the Gophers have had five individuals earn 10 awards.
A freshman from Madison, Wis., Kessel scored two goals and set up two others for four points in host Minnesota’s 8-0 win over the Huskies last Friday (Feb. 4). She netted an unassisted goal at 17:10 in the first period and held the first assist on both Jen Schoullis’ and Mira Jalosuo’s power-play goals. She also notched her second goal of the game at 8:54 of the third. Kessel followed on Saturday (Feb. 5) with a goal and two assists in a 4-1 Gopher victory. She scored a power-play goal at 10:38 in the first period and assisted on two other scores, including Ashley Stenerson’s first collegiate goal. On the weekend, Kessel scored seven points, fired 15 shots on goal and held a +6 rating. She leads the team this season in both points (36) and assists (23).
