Minnesota Faces Sacramento State in Midweek Games

The Minnesota baseball team will be back in action when it faces Sacramento State in a pair of midweek games on Tuesday, Mar. 15 at 4 p.m. (CT) and Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 4 p.m. (CT). Both games can be heard in the Gold Zone.

Minnesota enters the week with a 5-7 record after losing two out of three to Gonzaga at Sacramento State. These two midweek games will be the fourth and fifth games of the Gophers' eight-game California trip. Minnesota will face Santa Clara on Mar. 18-20 to wrap up the trip. The Gophers will also come back on Mar. 25-27 to Cal Poly on a separate trip.

Junior first baseman Nick O'Shea enters the week leading Minnesota in batting average (.405), doubles (5), RBI (10), total bases (27) and slugging percentage (.643). AJ Pettersen has collected his in all 12 games for the Gophers this year, and has a 15-game hitting streak going back to 2010. Pettersen is batting .380 with nine runs, four doubles and three stolen bases. Sophomore outfielder Justin Gominsky is also batting .348 with nine runs, four RBI and five stolen bases. Gominsky brings a nine-game hitting streak into the week.

Freshman Tom Windle will get his first career start for Minnesota against Sacramento State on Mar. 15. Windle is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA with seven strikeouts in eight innings in four relief appearances. The Gophers have not decided who they are throwing on Wednesday yet.

Sacramento State enters the week with a 4-12 overall record. The Hornets lost a three-game series at No. 22 UC Irvine by scores of 9-5, 5-3, 9-7. Sacramento State is led by Kirby Young who has a team-high nine RBI, while Derrick Chung is tied with a team-best eight runs and had five RBI. Eli Davis is batting .286 with three RBI, four runs and a team-best three stolen bases.

The Hornets will throw Karl Mass on Mar. 15 against Minnesota. Mass is 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA and .197 opponent batting average in 18.0 innings of work. Sacramento State will also throw Hunter Greenwood against the Gophers on Mar. 16. Greenwood has made two appearances and one start, and is 0-0 with a 9.64 ERA with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Sacramento State is coached by Reggie Christiansen, who was the former South Dakota State coach and is in his first season as the head coach and third as a coach with the program. The Hornets lead the all-time series against Minnesota 2-0. Sacramento State defeated the Gophers 4-0 and 12-7 in 2003.
