The University of Minnesota men’s golf team improved by 21 strokes on Saturday to post a combined score of 280 in the second round of the 2011 Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Georgia. The Gophers opened the invitational with a 301 on Friday and began day two in 11th place. The Gophers' second round score of 280 is the lowest 18-hole round of the season.

Minnesota finds itself in contention to pick up a top-five finish with a current standing of eighth heading into the final 18. The Gophers top finish of the 2010-11 season was a sixth place final standing in the Rod Myers Invitational in October.

“We played really well today and the end result was a low team score,” said associate head coach John Carlson. “We started slow on Friday but were able to make a move today in what I believe is the strongest field we have faced all year. Hopefully we can carry this over to Sunday and record a strong finish.”

The Gophers, as a team, did make a move on Saturday but the story of the day came from their senior leader Donald Constable. The Wayzata, Minn. native record the lowest score of the day with a six-under par 66 and will head into the final round in a tie for 10th place with a 36-hole score of three-under par 141. Constable began the day in a tie for 46th following an opening round 75. The second round 66 is his lowest round of his final collegiate campaign.

Jon Trasamar and Robert Bell each carded one-under par rounds of 71 to go with their identical 74’s on Friday and are in a tie for 32nd place. Erik Van Rooyen contributed an even-par round of 72 while David Haley Jr. recorded a 73.

Auburn holds a six-stroke lead in the team standings with a 36-hole combined score of 22-under par 554. The University of Florida is in second (560) followed by LSU (564), Virginia (565) and North Carolina State (570).

Florida’s Bank Vongvanij is the event’s current medalist with a two-day total of 10-under par 134 and holds a two and four-shot lead, respectively, over of Auburn Tigers.

The Gophers are scheduled to begin the third and final round at 7:00 p.m. Central. The entire round can be followed live at www.golfstat.com.
