Gophers Finish Seventh at Schenkel Invite

After recording a season low 280 in yesterday's second round, the University of Minnesota men's golf team posted a 299 in the final round of the Schenkel Invitational to finish in a tie for seventh place. The Gophers entered the day in eighth and were able to move up one spot in the standings at the 15 team event at Forest Heights Golf Club in Statesboro, Georgia.
Donald Constable, who carded a career low 66 on Saturday, was unable to keep the momentum rolling with a final round 77. With a three round total of 218, the senior finished in a tie for 20th in the individual standings.
John Trasamar posted a four-over par 76 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 36th, while Erik Van Rooyen and David Haley Jr. tied for the low Gopher round with 73's. The two earned ties for 46th and 50th place respectively. Playing in his first tournament of the spring, Robert Bell shot an 83 to finish tied for 68th.
Auburn defeated Florida on the first playoff hole after the two schools tied with 54-hole scores of 848 to earn the tournament championship. Virginia (858) ended up 10 shots back of the winner for third, while LSU (862) and North Florida (863) rounded out the top five.
Bank Vongvanij of Florida was able to hold off a five-under 67 by North Florida's Kevin Alywin to earn medalist honors, finishing at nine-under-par for the tournament.
With the seventh place finish, the Gophers have now recorded top-10 finishes in each of their first two events of the spring. The team also earned seventh at the Big Ten Match Play.
Minnesota will next head to the FAU Spring Break Invitational in Boca Raton, Florida on Fri. March 18.
