Gophers Earn Fifth Place Finish in Florida

The University of Minnesota men's golf team earned their best finish of the season at the FAU Spring Championship on Sunday, earning fifth place at the 18-team event in Delray Beach, Florida. The Gophers concluded the championship with a final round 285, giving the team their second-lowest score of the year with a 54-hole total of 870.

However, the story of the day was with sophomore Jon Trasamar, who led Minnesota with a four under 68 in the final round, a score only topped by individual medalist Brad Smith of Ohio State.  Trasamar's low round earned him a career-best fourth place finish, after the Blue Earth, Minn. native ended at four-under-par (212) for the weekend.

Senior Donald Constable concluded an impressive event as well with a 72 over his final 18 holes to earn a tie for seventh overall (214). Sophomore Erik Van Rooyen posted a 72 as well to end the event tied for 15th with a three round score of 217.

Sophomore David Haley Jr. carded a 73 to finish in a tie for 54th, while freshman Alex Gaugert shot a 94 to end in 89th position.

Ohio State posted a 293 in the final round to win the title with a total of 852, besting tournament host FAU by eleven strokes (863). Florida Gulf Coast earned third place at 867, while Miami (OH) edged the Gophers by one (869) for fourth place.

Moritz Ackerhans of Depaul and  Alex Medinis  of Florida Gulf Coast were runners up to Smith for medalist, topping Trasamar's effort by one shot each (211).

Minnesota will next head to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the LSU Invitational from Apr. 2-3.
