Seven Gopher Gymnasts named Academic All-Big Ten

Minnesota's 2010-11 winter sports teams had 73 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten recognition, conference officials announced on Wednesday, Mar. 30. Seven members of the women's gymnastics team were included on the list of honorees.

In order to qualify for Academic All-Big Ten honors, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.

Seniors Kendra Elm and Ana Balboa each earned their third career Academic All-Big Ten honors. Elm is majoring in biomedical engineering, while Balboa is majoring in marketing, human resources and industrial relations.

Juniors Lucy Ennis and Briana Jones were second-time Academic All-Big Ten honorees. Both are kinseiology majors.

Sophomores Janell Campbell and Shannon Golich, as well as senior Kristin Furukawa made the Academic All-Big Ten list for the first time. Campbell is a communications major, Golich is majoring in sociology, and Furukawa is majoring in sports management.

The Gophers will compete Saturday at the NCAA Regional Championship in Ann Arbor, Mich.
