Minnesota Falls to South Alabama 5-3

The Minnesota baseball team (3-4) dropped a 5-3 decision to South Alabama (6-3) in the Dairy Queen Classic on Friday, Mar. 4. In the second game, Washington State defeated Oklahoma State 13-2.
Minnesota was led by junior first Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) who went 2-for-5 with a run, a double and an RBI. O'Shea has now collected at least two hits in six of the Gophers' seven games. He also has a hit in all seven contests. Trip Schultz (Forest, Lake, Minn.) also reached base three times, and was 2-for-3.
Justin Gominsky (Mahtomedi, Minn.) was 1-for-5 with a run and stole his fourth base of the season. Freshman Bobby Juan (La Crosse, Wis.) also finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Andy Henkemeyer (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) scored the Gophers' other run.
AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) collected a hit to give him one in each of Minnesota's seven games this year. Both starting pitchers had strong outings, and the two team's pitching staffs combined to walk only batter on the day.
Sophomore TJ Oakes (Jordan, Minn.) took a tough loss to fall to 0-2, as he gave up six hits, four runs, did not walk a batter and struck out five in 7.1 innings. Tom Windle (Maple Grove, Minn.) gave up three hits, one unearned run and struck out three batters in 1.2 innings of relief.
South Alabama starting pitcher Garrett Harris picked up the win to move to 2-0, as he gave up eight hits, two runs and struck out seven in eight innings of work. Cory McGinnis picked up his second save of the season, as he gave up one unearned run and walk in an inning of work.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when the Jaguars pushed three runs across the plate to take a 3-0 lead. Jordan Patterson led off with a single, and moved to second when Jake Overstreet was hit by a pitch. Brent Tanner plated Patterson with an RBI single to give South Alabama a 1-0 lead. Nolan Earley followed with an RBI double to bring home Overstreet to push the lead to 2-0. With two outs, Brad Hook brought home Tanner with an RBI single to move the Jaguars lead to 3-0.
Minnesota answered with a single run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1. O'Shea and Schultz started the inning with back-to-back singles to make it first and third with no outs. Juan brought home O'Shea with an RBI single to make it 3-1. Schultz moved to third when he tagged up on fly out by Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.). However, Harris retired the next batters to keep South Alabama ahead by two runs.
The Gophers got a single run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Jaguar lead to one run. With two outs, Gominsky laid down a perfect bunt single and came around to score an RBI double by O'Shea to cut the lead to 3-2.
South Alabama pushed its lead back to three runs at 5-2 with a two-run top of the eighth inning. Taylor White got things started with a one-out single up the middle. Windle came in and got the second out on a Patterson on fielder's choice
ground out that retired White at second. Overstreet followed with a single to make it first and second. Tanner delivered an
RBI single to bring home Patterson. On the same play, Tanner was caught in between first and second. However, the throw to
second sailed into the outfield allowing Overstreet to come home and score the fifth run.
Minnesota got a single run in the bottom of the ninth to cut the lead to 5-3. Henkemeyer led off the inning with a walk,
and moved to second on a ground out by Pettersen. With two outs, Gominsky hit a high pop up that was dropped by the second
baseman, allowing Henkemeyer to score. McGinnis retired O'Shea on a ground out to close out the game.

Minnesota will be back in action when it faces Washington State in its second game of the Dairy Queen Classic on Saturday,
Mar. 5 at 2:05 p.m. (CT). Oklahoma State and South Alabama will play the second game at approximately 5:05 p.m. (CT). The
