As the Golden Gopher rowing program prepares for the spring season, gophersports.com will get to know some of the varsity rowers. This week is Kate Ladell. Here's a brief question and answer session with the senior from Madison, Wis.
The first thought I had when joining the rowing program was:
The older rowers look so intense!
What made you chose Minnesota?
I picked Minnesota because I like the campus and school a lot and I really liked the people who I met during my visit. It is different from my home town but not too far away from my family.
The most challenging thing I've had to do in college so far is:
The most challenging thing has been adjusting to each new class and staying on top of the homework for classes that do not interest me as much as others.
My most memorable sports experience was:
Club Nationals over the summer. It was so hot and we raced so many times. We had to just stay positive and it turned into a super fun trip.
What advice would you give to younger student-athletes?
HAVE FUN! Always remember the reason you are doing the sport and make sure you use the resources that the athletic department offers.
If you were to compete in a different sport at the U, what would it be and why?
I would say hockey because it is so different from any other sport I have played.
What has been your funniest road trip memory so far?
There are so many! I think any skit night on spring break would be my favorite.
If you were stranded on a desert island and you could bring three things, what would it be?
I would bring sunscreen, my friend who is a pilot and an airplane.
My teammates would describe me as:
Hard working, dedicated and always looking for the answer to my questions
If I could trade places with anyone for one day, who would it be and why?
I would trade places with my sister, Colleen, who teaches art at a private school in China. I think it would be great to experience the things that she gets to see and do every day.
Something that most people wouldn't have known about me is:
Athletic Director Joel Maturi was my dad's gym teacher in high school.
Do you have a favorite pre-race pump up song? A favorite steady state song?
Pre-race song: Act a Fool by Flosstradamus and Steady State- Sweet Disposition by Temper Trap.
Favorite meal:
Tie: Steak and potatoes or chicken parmigiana
What is your favorite U of M Tradition?
Singing the rouser
