Schedule Altered for Softball Home Opener

4/1/2011 12:00:00 AM | Softball

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota softball team's home opener against Ohio State on Saturday, originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, has been pushed back an hour and will now start at 2 p.m. local time.

Additionally, the Minnesota softball youth clinic scheduled to follow Sunday's game against the Buckeyes has been rescheduled for April 17th after the Gophers' game against Penn State.

Minnesota kicks off the first of six home series this weekend, hosting the Buckeyes in a two-game series. After opening the season with 33 road games, this weekend will mark the first chance Minnesota will have to play at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium under first-year head coach Jessica Allister.

After rounding out the nonconference season and kicking off Big Ten play last weekend at Indiana, Minnesota enters the weekend with a 19-14 overall record and a 1-1 record in conference play. The Gophers' 19 wins this season are already three more than the team tallied all of last year while the program needs one more win to equal its Big Ten total from 2010. 19 wins are also tied for second most in the conference behind Michigan, who paces the Big Ten with a 31-2 overall record. Early in the season, Ohio State doesn't sit far behind Minnesota in the conference standings with a 0-2 record, but the Buckeyes are 7-20 overall. The team is also riding a seven-game losing streak that includes a pair of losses last weekend to Iowa in the Big Ten opening weekend.
