Six Gophers Medal at U.S. Open/Junior Nationals

Six wrestlers with ties to the Gopher wrestling program medaled at the 2011 U.S. Open/ASICS FILA Junior Nationals in Cleveland last weekend.

Former Gopher C.P. Schlatter and current Gophers Pat Smith and Jake Kettler all medaled in the senior Greco-Roman competitions with Schlatter leading the way with a third-place finish in the 66 kg/145.5 lbs. bracket. The former Gopher topped Smith, who finished fourth, in the third-place match while Kettler finished fourth in the 120 kg/264.5 lbs. brackets. All three qualified for the final World Team Trials in Oklahoma City on June 10-11.

Meanwhile, a trio of Minnesota wrestlers qualified for the Junior World Trials on May 18-19 in Indiana after medaling in the freestyle competition last weekend. Nick Dardanes went 4-1 to finish second in the 60 kg/132.25 lbs. bracket while Scott Schiller went 5-1 to finish third in the 96 kg/211.5 lbs. division. Meanwhile, Dylan Ness finished fourth in the 66 kg/145.5 lbs. bracket with a 4-2 record at the event.
