Gophers Place Ninth at Illini Spring Classic

The Minnesota men's golf team earned a ninth place finish at the 14 team Illini Spring Classic in Urbana, Ill. on Sunday after a final round 296. Originally scheduled for 54-holes, the tournament was cut short due to rain delays on Saturday which limited the event to just two rounds. The Gophers finished just 12 strokes back of third place Illinois State.
Donald Constable continued to add to his impressive senior season with another top-ten finish. The Wayzatta, Minn. native took home a tie for seventh after carding a final round, two-under-par 70 for a 36-hole score of 147.
Erik Van Rooyen concluded his weekend two back of Constable in a tie for 18th place after an even-par 72 on Sunday.
Robert Bell used a 75 over his final 18 holes to finish with a two day total of 157 and a tie for 54th. Jon Trasamar recorded a second straight 80 to tie for 63rd position, while Shang Zhi shot a 79 in round two to tie for 71st.
Akron was able to succesful maintain its first round lead to take home the tournament title, beating host Illinois by 10 strokes. Illinois State and Northwestern tied for third place (600), with Indiana securing fifth (601).
William Sjaichudin of Purdue earned medalist honors with a 36-holetotal of 143, besting runner up Eric Chung from Northwestern by one stroke.
Minnesota will next travel to Columbus, Ohio to participate in the Robert Keppler Invitational from April 23-24 on the campus of Ohio State.
