Gophers Lead Field with 18 Holes Left at Pinehurst

The Minnesota women's golf team is currently in a tie for first place with one round remaining at the Pinehurst Challenge in North Carolina. The Gophers carded rounds 306 and 309 respectively over the first 36 holes of the event on Mon. and are tied with host, College of Charlestown, heading into Tuesday's final round at the famed no. 6 course in Pinehurst, N.C.
Seniors Mary Narzisi and Teresa Puga led Minnesota on Monday, as the duo occupies the second and third spots on the leaderboard with 18 holes to play. Narzisi sits only three shots off the lead in second after rounds of 75 and 76, while Puga is four behind the top spot after a 75 and 77.
Freshman Banchalee Theinthong rebounded from an 84 in the first round with the lowest second round score in the field, an even par 72. The impressive rebound puts her in a tie for ninth position. Senior Michele Edlin is one back of Thienthong in a tie for 12th after a 76 in round one and an 81 on the second 18 holes.
Fellow senior Samantha Sommers is tied or 21st having carded rounds of 80 and 79. Sophomore Jackie Shepared recovered from an 83 opening round to post a 77 and is tied for 27th heading into Sunday.
As a team, Minnesota is 14 shots clear of third place Samford, 15 ahead of Morehead State in fourth, and 22 strokes in front of Campbell.
Final round play will conclude tomorrow. Results will be posted at www.cofcsports.com following the round.
