Constable 16th, Van Rooyen 64th at NCAA Regional

Playing as individuals at the NCAA San Diego Regional, University of Minnesota men's golfers Donald Constable and Erik Van Rooyen are tied for 16th and 64th respectively after round one of the 54-hole tournament. Constable posted an even-par 72, while Van Rooyen shot an 80 at the Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Cali.
A senior captain, Constable was as high as fourth on the overall leaderboard through 15 holes, but a bogey on 17 pushed him back in the standings. The Wayzatta native birdied five holes on the day, but a double bogey on hole eight and three bogeys prevented him from a lower round. Constable is six strokes back of Southern California's Jeffrey Kang who shot a six-under 66 to lead the field after the opening 18 holes.
Three double-bogeys marked Van Rooyen's first round, as the sophomore posted a 42 on the front nine and a 38 on the back. A native of South Africa, Van Rooyen's only birdie of the day came at hole 12, though he started to turn things around with five straight pairs to close out the round.

In the team portion of the tournament, USC leads the field, with UCLA and Texas tied for second. North Texas sits in third, while host Sand Diego is in fifth.
