Donald Constable Named Second Team All-Big Ten

The Big Ten Conference announced that Gopher senior Donald Constable has been named to the 2011 men's golf All-Big Ten Second Team. Also, sophomore Erik Van Rooyen, who was named to the 2011 Big Ten Championship team following his fourth place finish at the championships, is Minnesota’s honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Constable is the 29th Gopher player to be named All-Big Ten, a list that has included a member of the Gopher Gophers in 10 of the last 11 years. Former Gopher All-American Bronson La’Cassie was a four-time member of the All-Big Ten First Team (2004-07) while current Director of Golf John Harris was twice named to the All-Big Ten First Team (1973, 74).
A senior from Minnetonka, Minn., Constable led the Gophers in the fall and spring seasons in stroke average at 71.33 and 72.77, respectively. His combined stroke average of 72.12 this season is the fifth-lowest in the history of Minnesota golf and is his lowest in the two seasons he has been at the U. Constable’s current career average of 73.0 is the third lowest in Gopher Golf history.
Constable finished the regular season having posted five top-10 and 10 top-20 finishes in 11 tournaments, including a runner-up finish at the Rod Myers Invitational in October. Van Rooyen also appeared in 11 tournaments during the regular season, finishing with the team’s second-lowest stroke average (72.28). He accumulated three top-five and eight top-20 finishes on the season.
The 2010-11 season may not be over for Constable and Van Rooyen, however, as both players could be chosen to compete in an NCAA Regional as an individual. The duo will learn their NCAA fate on Monday, May 9.
The conference office also announced that Van Rooyen is Minnesota's honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. All student-athletes that are chosen for the award are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
