University of Minnesota director of athletics Joel Maturi announced Friday that John Harris has resigned his position as the Gopher's director of golf, effective July 1.

"I want to thank John for his efforts and the work he has done with both our men's and women's programs as director of golf," said Maturi. "We are proud of the performances of his teams over the past year, and in particular the women's program reaching its first NCAA Championship since 1989. John cares deeply for this university and I understand his decision. I wish him nothing but the best in the future."

Harris emphasizes that "I was very excited about returning to my alma mater and giving back to The University of Minnesota, which has been so good to me and shaped my values and beliefs. I am very pleased with the accomplishments we have achieved with both teams during my tenure. I have spent a lot of time on the road pursing my amateur and professional golf careers, and again as director of golf at the University of Minnesota. My wife and I are looking forward to spending more time on travels and pursuits that are not so focused on golf. I feel that it is best for the University of Minnesota and the golf program for another coach to move forward to build on the current positive performance momentum in the program."

According to Maturi, a national search to replace Harris will begin immediately.
