Senior Briana Jones is the team captain of the 2012 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team. The Grand Fork, N.D. native is a balance beam and floor exercise specialist for the Gophers. GopherSports.com sat down with Briana to get a little insight on what it takes to be not only a gymnast at the collegiate level but also how difficult it is to balance life as a student-athlete.

What drew you to compete at the University of Minnesota?

The team and the coaches, they made me feel at home and that they cared about the full package. It was the perfect fit.

What can fans expect from this year's team?
We are a small, but mighty team. We have some stand-out skills and we are very consistent. They can expect a team that qualifies to the NCAA National Championships.

What does it mean to you to be chosen as the 2012 captain?
Being chosen team captain meant a lot to me, that the girls really believed in me and my leadership skills. I am lucky to be leading such a talented and unique group of girls.

With being a beam and floor specialist, which do you like better and why?
It depends on the day. I really like both of them- so whichever event goes better that day is usually my favorite.

What goes through your head when competing (beam and floor)?
I have a mental routine of cue words and affirmation statements that give me little reminders and confidence boosters for each skill.

You have been successful not only in gymnastics but also in the classroom. What is the secret to excelling at being a student-athlete?
Time-management. As student-athletes, we are given so many wonderful resources that it is hard not to succeed. It is really important to manage your time and take advantage of every opportunity.

As the team captain, how do you motivate yourself and your teammates to perform well in both gymnastics and academics?
I think the biggest motivation for not only me, but also my team is accountability. We are all in this together, for both school and gymnastics. We lean on each other and we expect a lot out of each other.

Gymnastics has its fair share of injuries, so what has kept you focused on pushing through the aches and pains of this sport?
I just continue to plan for the good things to come and remember what a privilege it is to be on this team. The coaches and my teammates are great about supporting through injuries.

What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to attend Physical Therapy grad school in the Fall, 2012. I have a few acceptances and have not decided yet where I will go.

What advice have you received from Meg or any of the other Minnesota coaches that you will always remember?
My two favorite "Meg-isms" are "Nothing is easy" and "It could always be worse". She has really taught me to work hard in everything I do but also to count my blessings and to always be positive.
