University of Minnesota head baseball coach John Anderson has announced that Joey Brettingen (Golden Valley, Minn.) has been accepted into the University of Minnesota and will join the Gopher baseball program in the fall of 2012.

A senior a Hopkins High School, Brettingen is a multi-sport athlete in baseball and hockey. The captain of the Royals baseball team this upcoming season, Brettingen had 81 at bats as a junior, tied a team-high 22 runs batted in and held a fielding percentage of .972. The Royals finished 2011 season as the Section 6AAA runner-up. Along with high school team, Brettingen played for the Hopkins Flyers Post #320 Legion Team last season where he had four home runs and a batting average of .385. Brettingen is also a two-year captain of Hopkins hockey team and between the two sports, earned four letters. The son of Kip and Pam Brettingen, Joey is a standout student, holding a grade point average of 3.93 and is a member of the National Honor Society.

"Joey continues the Gopher baseball tradition as an athletic, multi-tool player with great power and speed," Anderson said. "As he improves his skills at Minnesota, Joey will continue his development and is projected to play third base. Not only is he a good athlete, he excels in the classroom and is a quality person from a great family."

"I chose the U of M because I could not feel more at home at any other school," Brettingen said. "On my official visit, the guys on the team were extremely inviting and made me feel like I was already part of the baseball family. The coaches also did the same. They care about you and want you to succeed both on and off the field, and will do whatever it takes to make that happen. Along with the team, the facilities the University has to offer, such as the Metrodome and Bierman, are some of the best I've seen. It is truly a blessing to be playing college baseball for the Gophers and I cannot wait to get started."
