FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
1. Minnesota enters this weekend with a spotless 10-0 record for the first time since the 2004-05 season, a year that they went on to repeat as national champions. Dating back to last season, the Gophers hold a 17-game winning streak, which is the second longest in program history. The longest winning streak in Minnesota history is 20 games, which was accumulated during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 season.
2. The Gophers look to remain undefeated this weekend against Minnesota Duluth, who they hold a 32-24-6 all-time record against, but the task will not be easy since the Maroon & Gold have not swept the Bulldogs since the 2008-09 season. Last year, the Gophers went 4-1 against UMD, including a 2-0 win in Duluth, Minn. to capture the WCHA Tournament crown. That solo loss to the Bulldogs came on January 13, 2012, and it was the last time Minnesota lost on the road.
3. Freshman Milica McMillen was named WCHA Rookie of the Week for having three points (two goals, one assist) in the Gophers' road sweep of North Dakota last weekend. It is the first time the St. Paul, Minn. native has won the award, but in four of the five weeks this season, a Minnesota player has won the award. Hannah Brandt has received the award twice (Oct. 3 and Oct. 24) while Maryanne Menefee garnered it once (Oct. 10).
4. Dating back to last season, the Maroon & Gold are on an 11-game road winning streak. During those 11 games, Minnesota has recorded five shutouts and is averaging nearly five and a half goals per game (5.45) while holding its opponents to a 1.09 average. The last time the Gophers had a streak this long was the 2008-09 and the 2009-10 seasons, which was a 15 game span.
5. Minnesota has been an offensive powerhouse thus far this season with notching 64 goals, which makes for 6.4 goals per game. Specials teams for the Gophers have possibly be the most impressive as they have converted on 20-of-53 (.377) power play opportunities. To complement the offensive, the Maroon & Gold defense has been equally impressive by only allowing six goals and garnering a shutout in six of their 10 games. On penalty kills, the Gophers are 2-of-45 (.044).
SCOUTING MINNESOTA DULUTH
The Bulldogs come into the weekend with a 3-4-1 overall record and 2-3-1 in the WCHA. They are coming off a weekend split with No. 6 Boston College. UMD began the season by getting swept by Ohio State but rebounded by sweeping Wisconsin. Since then, they have gone 1-2-1 with a pair of one-goal losses.
Leading Minnesota Duluth right now is sophomore Jenna McParland, who has six points (two goals, four assists) on the year. Fellow sophomore Zoe Hickel leads the team in goals with three.
UMD starts freshman Kayla Black in goal, and she has played every minute this season. Black has a goal against average of 1.88 and a .930 save percentage. She has two shutouts on the year, which both came against the Badgers.
