The University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team held its second and final intrasquad meet last Saturday at Cooke Hall.
Coach Mike Burns utilized a new format for the event, as his Gophers competed in a head-to-head format. The same format will be used when Minnesota visits Illinois on March 8.
"This new format is a way to bring back a sense of the head-to-head competition," said Burns. "Justin Spring at Illinois devised this system in an attempt to bring more excitement to the competitive atmosphere of our meets this year. We decided to use our dual meet at Illinois as an experiment to see if this is a system we want to adopt for the entire NCAA program."
On Saturday, the Gold Team, which won the previous intrasquad meet, began the competition on the floor exercise. Matt Frey was the first to compete and performed a "very nice set' according to Burns.
The Maroon Team then strategized and selected a competitor who they thought would be able to top Frey. Adam LaFleur was chosen by the Maroon Team and turned in his best routine of the preseason. By beating Frey, LaFleur earned one point for his team.
The head-to-head matchup, which incorporates skill and strategy, was used for the remainder of the meet.
The Maroon Team avenged its previous loss in intrasquad competition, besting the Gold Team 13-9. Winning routines from each event are as follows:
- Floor Exercise - Harris Coleman, Maroon, 15.6
- Pommel Horse - Ellis Mannon, Gold, 14.9
- Still Rings - tie between Zack Chase, Gold and Michael Farquhar, Maroon, 14.40
- Vault - tie between Adam LaFleur, Maroon and Sean Bauer, Maroon, 14.60
- Parallel Bars - Steve Jaciuk, Maroon, 14.50
- High Bar - Steve Jaciuk, Maroon, 14.80
