The University of Minnesota women's rowing team is set to take to the water for the first time in 2012 when it travels to San Diego for a preseason scrimmage Saturday and Sunday.

The Gophers' varsity eights and fours will practice in even lineups and will do short pieces at low and mid-range rates. The coaches will switch up the lineups as the event moves along.

Minnesota will race two eights and two fours, while San Diego will have two eight and three fours competing in the exhibition event.

The competition will continue on Sunday, where the Maroon and Gold will put together their first versions of its first varsity boats and second varsity boats, but will have the ability to make switches as the day goes on.

The novices will race a series of pyramid-type races, bringing the stroke ratings up and then back down, which are crucial for novices to learn how to accelerate the boats at various rates. The rookies will be rowing in mixed line ups.

Along with the varsity, the novices will be split into first novice and second novice boats on Sunday.
