Day 1 Results

The University of Minnesota women's track and field team wrapped up its first day at the Big Ten Track and Field Indoor Championships. Minnesota finished the first day with many personal best performances and will look to keep improving tomorrow.

The Maroon and Gold picked up their first point of the championships in the distance medley relay. Kathryn Ritter, Megan Geyen, Lauren Domski and Katie Moraczewski clocked in at a season best time of 11:36.63, which put them in 10th place. The Golden Gophers edged out Wisconsin's relay by .12 seconds to earn the team point.

Chimerem Okoroji and Kylie Peterson each are moving onto the finals of the 60m dash. Both set new personal best times this afternoon for the Gophers. Okoroji finished with the fourth fastest time today at 7.41, while Peterson ran a 7.53 and squeezed into the final spot for the finals tomorrow.

Also moving into the finals tomorrow is Heather Brunn in the 800m. Brunn finished with a career best time of 2:10.38 and finished eighth overall in the preliminary round.

In the pentathlon Minnesota entered two Gophers who made their first Big Ten Championship appearance. Jess Herauf and Nicole Murphey both finished with their highest point total of the season. Herauf took 10th place with 3,516 points and Murphey was right behind her in 11th with 3,461 points. Both hit career highs in three events a piece. Herauf had top marks in the high jump (1.55m, 5-1), shot put (11.27m, 36-11 ¾) and long jump (5.31m). Murphey improved in the 60m high hurdles (9.04), high jump (1.46m, 4-9 ½) and shot put (10.53m, 34-6 ¾).

A few other season best times and performances this afternoon came from Chidera Obasih in the 60m (7.55), Kathryn Ritter in the 800m (2:12.13), and Becca Pilkerton in the pole vault, who cleared 3.88m (12-8 ¾).
