Through one round of play at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., the Minnesota men's golf team is in 12th place. The Golden Gophers could not take advantage of near perfect weather, posting a score of 300 (+12). The tournament runs through Sunday, with one round each day.

David Haley Jr. led the team with an even-par 72. He finished strong, birdying two of his last three holes, and enters the second round tied for 23rd place. The rest of the Gophers were over par. Erik Van Rooyen bookended his round with birdies, but had four bogeys in between to finish with a 2-over 74. Robert Bell and Jon Trasamar each posted rounds of 77. Tim Peterzen recorded an 81. While several Gophers struggled during their first competition in weeks, Haley was a bright spot.

"David Haley had one of his best rounds as a golfer, so that was good to see," head coach John Carlson said. "We still have a few more days, so we'll see what we can do."

Alabama leads the competition with a tournament-record team score of 268 (-20). Individually, Virginia's Ben Kohles sits atop the leaderboard with a 65 (-7).
