The University of Minnesota rowing team officially opens its 2012 season this weekend at the Oak Ridge Invitational on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Action begins Saturday at 9:00 a.m. CT, with an evening portion beginning at 3:00 p.m. CT. Racing continues Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
The Golden Gophers will open the year against a tough field of competitors, as Alabama, Kansas, Virginia, Buffalo, Wisconsin, Duke, Dayton, Notre Dame, Jacksonville, Tennessee and host Louisville will all be taking part in the event.
Minnesota will kick off Saturday's morning session vs. Buffalo and Kansas with the second varsity four squad getting underway at 9:08 a.m., followed by the second varsity eight at 9:16 a.m.
At 9:24 a.m., the first varsity four will shove off, and the varsity eight will conclude the morning session for the Gophers at 9:32 a.m.
Following the break, the Maroon and Gold will take on Notre Dame and the Jayhawks in the evening session. The 2V4 will be the first on the water at 4:28 p.m., followed by the 2V8 at 4:36 p.m., the 1V4 at 4:44 p.m. and the 1V8 at 4:52 p.m.
The event will conclude on Sunday morning with Minnesota facing off against Duke and Virginia with the first race set to begin at 9:48 a.m.
With a mild winter in Minneapolis, the Maroon and Gold has been able to take advantage and practice on the Mississippi River from their boathouse in East River Flats Park, a rarity for the squad before its first event.
