Pair of second-place results from Gophers
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Golden Gophers rowing team turned in a pair of second-place efforts to highlight the final day of competition on Sunday at the 2026 Big Ten Invitational from Lake Natoma.
Minnesota's seven boats again faced some of the nation's top programs in the California sunshine from the Sacramento State Aquatics Center in the third and final session of the two-day regatta. The morning started with both the Second Varsity Four and First Varsity Four crews placing third, finishing behind a pair of nationally-ranked opponents in UCLA and USC.
In a tightly-contested battle among Second Varsity Eight boats, the Gophers launched their sprint at the perfect time to hold off Washington State and record another third-place effort. Thanks to a fast start, the First Varsity Eight put together an open-water lead over the Trojans on the way to earning a second-place finish.
The Fourth Varsity Eight boat battled through the entire 2,000-meter course to place third before the Third Varsity Four crew tallied another impressive result to close the weekend. After picking up a race win Saturday, the group returned to action Sunday and fought to finish second.

Coach Strodel's Comments
"We had strong representation across every boat class and event, and it was exciting to see the 3V4 earn a win in the afternoon session yesterday. There's still plenty of work ahead before the B1G Championship, and this weekend showed us the speed we need to find over the next four weeks. Our athletes are ready for the challenge," Head Coach Alicea Strodel said.
