Tyler to Represent Canada at London 2012 Olympic Games

Former Minnesota swimmer Jillian Tyler (Calgary, Alberta) earned a spot on the Canadian Olympic Team for the second time in her career by placing first in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Canadian Olympic Trials Thursday night in Montreal, QC. The swimming portion of the London 2012 Olympic Games is set to take place July 28-August 4 at the London Aquatics Centre in London, England.
On top of claiming the title in the 100-meter breaststroke, Tyler's time of 1:07.18 was well under the Olympic qualifying time of 1:08.49. Tyler beat out second-place finisher, Tera Van Beilen, by 0.19 seconds and improved on her time of 1:07.79 in the preliminaries by 0.61 seconds.
Tyler also represented Canada at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, where she finished 13th overall in the 100-meter breaststroke semifinals with a time of 1:09.00. Tyler advanced to the semifinals with a 10-place finish overall in the prelims when she touched the wall in a time of 1:08.13.
One of the most decorated swimmers in Minnesota history, Tyler was the NCAA Champion in the 100-yard breaststroke in her senior campaign in 2011 and was also a Honda Award Finalist. Tyler finished her Gopher career as a 13-time All-American, which included four-straight All-America honors in the 100-yard breaststroke, and an eight-time Big Ten Champion.
Minnesota freshman Jessica Plant also competed in the Canadian Olympic Trials Thursday night, placing fifth in the B Final of the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:02.68. Plant advanced to the consolation final of the event after clocking a time of 2:03.19 in the preliminaries.
