Freshman Kylie Schermann is a local talent that was drawn to the University of Minnesota for a plethora of things, and since joining the team, the Lakeville, Minn. native has shined. Schermann has been a staple on beam and floor for the Gophers all season. GopherSports.com sat down with Kylie to get a little insight on how she has transitioned to collegiate gymnastics, and who has influenced her in and out of the gym.

What is your favorite event, and why?
My favorite event changes a lot, but normally it is beam or floor. I enjoy floor because it is like a performance. It is more emotional, and you can get the audience involved in your performance. Also, I generally do better in those two events, so that is another reason.

How did you get started in gymnastics, and at what age?
I think I began around 3 years old. My parents owned a gym, so that is how I got involved. Also, both of my parents were gymnasts.

What is the biggest adjustment from club gymnastics to collegiate gymnastics?
It is more of a team feel in collegiate gymnastics. In club it is a team sport, but it is mostly based around individual performances and awards. So the team atmosphere in college gymnasts is just more fun.

What are your goals for not only this season, but also your career?
As a team, we would like to win the Big Ten Championship as well as qualify for NCAA Nationals this season. As far as an individual goal, I would like to be an All-American at some point in my career. I know it takes a lot hard of work, but I am willing to put in the time.

What drew you to the University of Minnesota?
There were a lot of things that made me want to come here. First off, I live nearby, so I am able to go home when I want to. Also, I knew Meg as I grew up, and I like how she has instilled a fun atmosphere for her teams, which was really important for me.

What is it like to compete a university in your home state?
It is definitely really exciting. I love looking in the crowd and seeing familiar faces along with signing autographs for little girls that went to my club. So I think overall, it makes competing more fun because of all the familiar faces that come watch me compete.

What is the most challenging aspect you have had to face since joining the team?
The toughest thing is probably balancing gymnastics and school at the same time. With being in gymnastics, it is almost like having a full-time job while also going to school.

Who is/are the most influential person/people throughout your gymnastics career?
I would definitely say my mom and dad. Growing up, they were able to not only coach me at practice but also at home, so they were able to understand my feelings after a good day or bad day at the gym. Also, Mindy Kiff because she has helped me a lot throughout my gymnastics career.

Who is your favorite gymnast of all-time?
I would say Shannon Miller was one of my favorite gymnasts when I was growing up. I met her once when I was really little and don't remember a whole lot, but I love to look back at those pictures.
