The University of Minnesota women's rowing team travels to Charlottesville, Va., this weekend to compete in the UVa Invitational on Lake Monticello. Action is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The Gophers will see some tough competition at the event, as they will be going up against some of the best teams in the nation. The No. 19-ranked varisty eight will challenge Virginia's varsity eight, which is ranked No. 1 in the latest CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, while the Maroon and Gold will also be going against No. 14 Cornell and No. 15 Michigan State in the 1V8 event.
The Maroon and Gold will take on San Diego and Northeastern in Saturday's morning session, before taking on the Spartans and Pennsylvania in the afternoon session. Sunday's morning session will pit the Gophers against the host Cavaliers and the Big Red.
"It's always exciting to race in new places, and to go up against new teams," senior captain Molly Kalmoe said. "This weekend we have the opportunity to race against some of the most competitive programs in the country. It's a great experience for our team, and it will help us continue to improve our times and technique."
Kalmoe also stated that when preparing for the event this weekend, she gave her team a few words of encouragement.
"I remind them to just be the confident and capable rowers that I know they are."
Minnesota is coming off its first Big Ten action of the season in Bloomington, Ind., last weekend where it swept the host Indiana in the morning session, but fell short of Ohio State later in the day.
Kalmoe talked about the varsity eight's victory over the Hoosiers and how important it was for the Gophers.
"Our sweep against Indiana at the double dual last weekend really helped us establish ourselves as a team" the senior said. "When our crews arrived on the starting line, we were able to put our training to the test. It was fun to see how we stack up against other Big Ten schools at this point in the season and to get another racing experience under our belts."
