Head of the Rock Results

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Minnesota's rowing team faced its first NCAA Division I competition of the season on Sunday at the Head of the Rock regatta, and head coach Wendy Davis' Gophers fared very well.

Minnesota had three entries in the Collegiate 4+ and three in the Collegiate 8+, with the Gophers taking first, second and fifth in the 4's, and second, fifth and seventh in the 8's.

In the Collegiate 4, Minnesota's A boat of coxswain Armonia Balch, Katherine Windsor, Lynn Hodnett, Ellen Hughes, and Catherine Ahrens narrowly edged out the Gophers' B boat of coxswain Meredith Kelly, Lisa Weeks, Chelsea Miller, Sarah Sobek, and Jaime Friscia by just 0:00.31. The winning time for the A boat was 17:10.19.

According to Davis, Minnesota's A boat in the 4's got caught way outside its intended line on the biggest turn on the Rock River course, which she estimates cost it about 10-15 seconds. So it was an impressive win for the Gophers top two boats, with Wisconsin boats finishing third, fourth, sixth and seventh.

In the 8's, Minnesota's A boat of coxswain Rachael Rogers, Katherine Windsor, Lynn Hodnett, Elisabeth Bott, Ellen Hughes, Sarah Sobek, Sara Scarbro, Lisa Weeks and Chelsea Miller captured second place in a time of 15:35.95. The Gophers' B team of coxswain Breanna TenEyck, Tabitha Andelin, Jen Kohl, Kylie Andersen, Rebecca Braak, Brianna Boileau, Madison Koch, Mari Sundbo and Nicolette Marquardt finished fifth in 15:49.27.

Minnesota now sets its sights on next weekend's trip to Boston for the Head of the Charles regatta, one of the world's largest rowing events. The Gophers' varsity 8 will compete at the regatta, which takes place Oct. 19-20.

NOTE: On the Collegiate 8+ video above, Minnesota was running a perfect line. The buoy, on the other hand, was not. It was a stray that had unfortunately floated into the Gophers' path.
