The Golden Gopher baseball team opened its intrasquad Steak 'n' Beans series last weekend. The Gold Team beat the Maroon Team 5-3 at Siebert Field.

Chris Schaaf collected three hits for the Gold Team, driving in one run. Both true and redshirt freshman made contributions for Gold, as Matt Stemper had 2 RBI, and Tyler Hanson and Dan Motl had one each. Motl hit a triple for Gold's only extra-base hit.

Freshman pitcher Matt Fiedler earned the victory pitching the last two innings of the game. He gave up one run on two hits and a walk and struck out the side in the seventh. Dalton Sawyer and Kevin Kray also pitched for Gold.

For the Maroon Team, Michael Handel went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Bobby Juan tripled and drove in a run. Matt Halloran drove in Maroon's other run. Brian Smith and Tony Skjefte each added a double.

Weather permitting, the Steak 'n' Beans series will continue this weekend. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. Parents Day and Scout Day, beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, will also include a scrimmage. All fall baseball scrimmages are free and open to the public.
