Battle with the West
After two conference duals in a row, the Golden Gophers take a break from the Big Ten to compete against the University of North Dakota. Hosted by North Dakota, Minnesota is set to conclude its mini three-meet series on the road.
Last Competition
Minnesota will enter the North Dakota dual with a 3-1 overall season record. Last weekend in Iowa City, Iowa, the Gophers defeated the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. The 174-126 win earned the Gophers their second victory in a row and pushed them to be undefeated in Big Ten competition.
No Change in Ranks
For the second poll period in a row, The University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team was ranked No. 7 overall by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Minnesota is the second highest ranked Big Ten team in the CSCAA poll. The only team placed higher in the leader board in the University of Michigan who is currently No. 1.
Stacking Up to North Dakota
The Minnesota-North Dakota rivalry is fairly new in swimming pool history as it only dates back to 1986. Since that very first match-up, the Gophers have only seen North Dakota in competition a total of seven times. However the Gophers hold a perfect record between the two schools and stand at 7-0. Last year, the 2012-13 season, was the last time the schools faced off against each other in a single dual competition; Minnesota won the dual with a score of 198-90. Previous to that the two schools had not seen one another since the 2005-06 season when in a two-day triple dual between Minnesota, North Dakota, and North Carolina the Gophers outscored North Dakota 151-32 and 262-85.
Racking Up the Awards
Helping his team secure a conference win over the University of Iowa, freshman Daryl Turner was awarded the Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor this past week. The accolade is the third Big Ten weekly award for the Colorado native as he has also won Swimmer of the Week (Oct.8) and Freshman of the Week (Oct. 22, Nov. 5).
