Day one of the Jean Freeman Invite concluded on Friday Dec. 6 with the University of Minnesota proving to be the top team in the competition. Held at the University Aquatic Center, teams in the Midwest area including Augsburg, Carlton College, Gustavus, Hamline, South Dakota State, St. John's, St. Olaf, and St. Thomas competed against the Gophers in the two-day multi-squad meet. Both the men's and women's swimming and diving team performed in honor of the late Jean Freeman, a former Golden Gopher swimming and diving coach who passed away in 2010.

The No. 10 women's team and the No. 5 men's team dominated the day by winning nearly every event that featured a Minnesota swim cap. Some highlights of the night included swimmer's from all across the Gopher board.

Kierra Smith and Breanne Siwicki took home the top two times in the 200 Individual Medley. Smith ultimately earned the top spot with a time of 2:04.43, while Siwicki finished right behind her with a time of 2:05.51.

Also on the women's side was Blake Zeiger who in the sprint category finished a 23.27 50 freestyle to receive the leading event title. Hailey Szews placed first in the 200 freestyle by swimming the event in 1:51.79.

For the men Daryl Turner added another 50 freestyle race to his season's list of first-places finishes. He swam his heat in a time of 20.45, beating out his previous top-time in the event of 20.76 which was recorded in the University of Wisconsin dual earlier in the year.

The 200 backstroke was won by Chris Johnson, who finished with a time of 1:51.77.

Minnesota relays were also very successful in the night. The 800 freestyle team made up of Paul Fair, Andrew Hartbarger, Erick Huft, and Turner completed the final heat in a time of 6:53.09 to earn the top spot.

The invitational continues on to Saturday, Dec. 7 with preliminaries beginning at 11 A.M. and final heats starting at 7 P.M.
