Gophers Tie MSU in Overtime, Fall in Shootout

EAST LANSING, Mich. - After picking up the first-ever Big Ten Conference win and the league's first sweep last weekend, the No. 1 Minnesota men's hockey team was unable to continue its trend of coming out ahead in the Big Ten's first-ever shootout on Friday night against Michigan State. The two Big Ten teams battled to an official 2-2 overtime tie before the Spartans prevailed 1-0 in a shootout for the bonus league point.
Twice Minnesota jumped out to a one-goal lead in the program's first Big Ten road game, but both times the home Spartans were able to rebound. Taylor Cammarata, who missed last weekend's Wisconsin series, snapped his four-game goal drought at 18:36 of the first period to put Minnesota up 1-0 with assists from Jake Bischoff and Justin Kloos, but Michigan State answered back early in the second period when Mackenzie MacEachern scored at 1:02 from Villiam Haag.
Kloos added his second point of the night with a power-play goal 51 seconds into the third period (assisted by Brady Skjei and Nate Condon), but the lead again wouldn't hold as Haag scored at 5:56 of the third from Lee Reimer and Greg Wolfe. Minnesota ended the night 1-for-3 on the power play while the penalty kill went 1-for-1. Kloos, meanwhile, took over sole possession of the Big Ten rookie scoring lead with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists) this season.
After no decision was found in overtime, Michigan State's Mike Ferrantino scored the only goal of the Big Ten's first-ever shootout to give the Spartans the bonus league point.
Adam Wilcox made 31 saves for the Gophers to move to 10-2-2 on the season while Jake Hildebrand made 44 saves to move to 4-5-1 for the Spartans.
