Gophers Get First Action in Scrimmage at San Diego

The University of Minnesota rowing team competed in its first competition of the Spring season when it made the trip to San Diego, Calif., for the second time in two months and took on San Diego in a two-day scrimmage.
The Golden Gophers got things started on Mission Bay on Friday, where they scrimmaged in rough water conditions in 20-30 stroke pieces.
After a day of rest, the team took to the water Sunday morning for a formal race against the Toreros. The Gopher squads competed in timed races, in lieu of a marked distance course, with the varsity eight boats competing in a six-minute duration race and both the varsity four and novice eight boats competing in seven-minute duration races.
Five of Minnesota's six competing boats won by open water.
The Gophers officially open their spring season at the Oklahoma Invitational March 9-10, where they will compete against teams from host Oklahoma, Kansas, Kansas State, Tulsa and Central Oklahoma.
