Minnesota sophomore Ellis Mannon will compete for an NCAA title today on the pommel horse in the Men's Gymnastics Championship in University Park, Pa.

Mannon was the lone Gopher to advance to the individual finals, as he qualified second with a score of 15.000. Michael Reid of Oklahoma was first with a 15.150.

A victory would make Mannon the third Gopher (fourth overall title) to win an NCAA championhsip on the pommel horse, as he would join Clay Strother (2001, 2002) and John Roethlisberger (1993). Strother, who also won an NCAA title on floor exercise in 2002 is the last Gopher to earn collegiate gymnastics highest honor.

Mannon, who will be the seventh of 10 gymnasts to compete, entered the NCAA Championship ranked third in the nation on the pommel horse. No. 1-ranked Craig Hernandez of Penn State did not advance, but second-ranked Garrek Hojan-Clark of Army did advance as he grabbed the final qualifying spot with a 14.550. Reid, who won the qualifier, was ranked No. 11 entering the championship.
