Junior Laura Docherty represented the Golden Gophers' last chance to have a competitor at the NCAA Women's Track and Field Championships, and she delivered. The St. Paul, Minn., native ran a personal-record time of 16:10.63 to finish fifth in her section and ninth overall in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas.
Docherty will make her first trip to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. The national meet runs June 5-8.
Docherty set the school record in the 10,000m this season, but focused only on the 5,000m for the NCAA West Preliminary Round. She finished second in the 10,000m and fourth in the 5,000m at the Big Ten Championships earlier this month.
Senior Emily Betz also competed for Minnesota on Sautrday, in the preliminary flights of the javelin throw, but did not advance to the finals. Her second throw traveled 136 feet, four inches (41.57m). Betz ended her Gopher career with three consecutive NCAA West Preliminary appearances.
