MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's hockey team (20-1-1, 14-1-1) tied Ohio State, 2-2, and lost a shootout at Ridder Arena on Saturday. The Gophers outshot Ohio State 36-25 and came from behind to take a lead in the third period, but a late Buckeyes goal sent the game to overtime.

Minnesota had several early chances in front of the net, but the Gophers and Buckeyes (7-12-3, 2-11-3 WCHA) went into the first intermission scoreless. Ohio State did not get its second shot on net until the 14:57 mark, and the Gophers withstood a 5-on-3 disadvantage for more than a minute late in the period.

Ohio State opened the scoring with a goal on its first shot of the second period. Julia McKinnon scored off a feed from Danielle Gagne at the 9:53 mark.

Goalie Lisa Steffes and the Buckeyes continued to hold Minnesota scoreless until the Gophers capitalized on a power play in the third period. Baylee Gillanders tied the game at 1:47, firing a one-timer off a pass from Rachel Bona for her fourth goal of the season.

Rachel Ramsey's eighth goal of the year gave Minnesota its first lead at 11:05. Set up by Jordyn Burns and Maryanne Menefee, Ramsey blasted a long shot off of Steffes and into the net.

But the Buckeyes tied it up again at 18:19. Ally Tarr scored a breakaway goal assisted by Taylor Kuehl and Sara Schmitt.

After a five-minute overtime period, Ohio State earned an extra point in the WCHA standings with the shootout win. It went nine rounds before Kendall Curtis sneaked the puck past Amanda Leveille.

The Gophers' last tie came against Bemidji State on Jan. 21, 2012, when they won a shootout after a 3-3 game against the Beavers. The last time Minnesota lost a shootout was against Wisconsin on Jan. 6, 2012.

The Gophers will return to the ice in a home-and-home series against Minnesota State next weekend. The first game will be on Friday, Jan. 17 at 4:30 p.m. at TCF Bank Stadium as part of the Hockey City Classic. The second will be on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. in Mankato.
