Minnesota Races Past Hawaii In Near Sweep

Recap • The University of Minnesota men's swim team defeated the Rainbow Warriors yesterday, January 11, in Honolulu. This improves the team's record to 5-1, with their only loss being against Florida earlier this season.
Minnesota won 13 of 14 events, as did the women's team (diving was not contested).
Freshman Daryl Turner won a pair of gold-place finishes in both the 100-yard back with a time of 49.54 and an impressive 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.91 over senior captain Derek Toomey who snagged second with a 45.32. Toomey won the 50-yard freestyle with a 20.32.
Kyler Van Swol also snagged first place in two individual events, the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:38.39 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.56.
CJ Smith, distance freestyler, won the 1000-yard free with a 9:15.68 and the 500-yard free with a 4:32.82. The
Gophers only allowed a first place spot, and event win taken away from them in the 100-yard breaststroke, however Minnesota managed to nab both second and third place by Nick Hatanaka (who took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:05.29) and Spencer Mattox.
Next Meet • The Men's swim and dive take on North Carolina State next on both January 24th at 6:00pm and January 25th at 10:00am at the University Aquatic Center.
