MINNEAPOLIS - The top-ranked Minnesota men's hockey team outlasted Big Ten conference foe Ohio State, 1-0, in a defensive struggle to win the Hockey City Classic at TCF Bank Stadium Friday night.
The 45,021 fans on hand gave the game the largest attendance ever for a hockey game in the state of Minnesota.
Minnesota netminder Adam Wilcox stopped all 21 shots he faced to earn his second shutout of the season and the fifth of his career. The victory improved the Gophers' record to 16-2-3 with a 6-0-1 ledger in league action, giving them a seven-point first place lead in the standings.
The game opened with a first period that lacked offensive chances as the teams combined for 15 shots. The best scoring chance came when OSU's Ryan Dzingel snuck in on a shorthanded breakaway with just over a minute to play. Wilcox outwaited the Buckeye forward to turn the opportunity aside.
After being outshot 8-7 in the opening period, Minnesota came out firing in the second, recording the first eight shots of the frame.
At the 4:20 mark, Gopher freshman forward Taylor Cammarata ended the stalemate when his shot from the slot beat OSU goaltender Matt Tomkins and trickled across the goal line. Junior captain Kyle Rau and senior Justin Holl picked up assists on Cammarata's fifth tally of the season.
The Gophers outshot Ohio State 14-8 in the middle stanza, but both goaltenders stood tall in a penalty-free period.
Just like the first period, neither team generated much offense in the third. OSU outshot Minnesota, 6-4, but was unable to solve Wilcox even after pulling Tomkins for an extra attacker in the game's waning moments.
Minnesota is now 13-1-0 all-time against the Buckeyes.
The two teams wrap up their weekend series Saturday at 5 p.m. at Mariucci Arena as a part of Hockey Day Minnesota. The Gophers' resume play next weekend against in-state rival and third-ranked St. Cloud State to open the North Star College Cup tournament at the Xcel Energy Center.
