MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 26 Gophers are set to split the squad to race at two meets this weekend, traveling to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Friday and Ettrick, Wis., for the Tori Neubauer Invitational on Saturday.
About the 2014 Wisconsin adidas Invitational
This Friday, the Gophers will race at one of the nation's premier collegiate meets, the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. The 6K race will start off at 11 a.m. in Madison, Wis., at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
This year marks the sixth annual running of the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. Forty women's teams are scheduled to take part in the meet, including Big Ten foes Indiana, No. 2 Michigan State, Ohio State, and host No. 15 Wisconsin.
The field includes 22 nationally ranked teams in No. 2 Michigan State, No. 5 Arkansas, No. 6 Stanford, No. 8 Iowa State, No. 9 Florida State, No. 10 Virginia, No. 11 New Mexico, No. 12 Syracuse, No. 13 North Carolina, No. 14 Washington, No. 15 Wisconsin, No. 16 Boise State, No. 17 Boston College, No. 19 William & Mary, No. 20 West Virginia, No. 23 Providence, No. 24 Dartmouth, No. 25 Arizona State, No. Minnesota, No. 27 Vanderbilt, No. 28 Notre Dame and No. 30 BYU.
About the 2014 Tori Neubauer Invitational
The Gophers not racing at the adidas Invitational will travel to Ettrick, Wis., for the 2014 Tori Neubauer Invitational. The annual 6K race is run in honor of former UW-La Crosse All-American and national champion Tori Neubauer. The women's 6K race is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. at Ettrick Golf Club, following the men's 8K race, the UW-La Crosse Jim Drews Invitational, which begins at 10:30 a.m.
Last Time Out: Gophers Win SDSU Classic, Take Second at Blugold Invite
Minnesota claimed the top three individual places and finished first in the team standings at the SDSU Classic 5K on Oct. 4. Becca Dyson, Kaila Urick and Liz Berkholtz led a field of 109 runners at Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings, S.D.
At the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational on Oct. 3, Minnesota tied for second in the team standings with St. Olaf with 105 points. Rebecca Rethwisch, who finished 18th overall in 22:58.1, led the Gophers. Anne Ferguson was Minnesota's second runner and placed 21st overall in 23:04.3.
USTFCCCA Rankings
Minnesota ranks No. 26 in the USTFCCCA national coaches poll with 70 points. The next poll will be released on Oct. 21.
Three other Big Ten Conference teams join the Gophers in the national top 30 in No. 1 Michigan, No. 2 Michigan State and No. 15 Wisconsin. Penn State (11) and Ohio State (2) also received votes. Two other Midwest Region teams are ranked among the nation's best in No. 8 Iowa State and No. 18 Oklahoma State.
Gophers Run Career Best 6K Times
Four Gophers have clocked career-best 6K times competing for the Maroon and Gold this year. Early in the season, redshirt junior Megan Bailey ran her career best of 23:27.8 at the Oz Memorial. Redshirt freshman Danielle Anderson ran her career best at the Roy Griak Invitational, completing the race in 22:09.9. Freshman Bailey Ness also ran a career-best 22:25.2 at the Griak. Most recently, redshirt freshman Naomi Ollila ran her career best in 23:54.1 at the Blugold Invitational.
2013 Wisconsin adidas Invitational Rewind
Last year at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational, Minnesota placed eighth overall with a score of 303. Liz Berkholtz is the Gophers' top returner from last year's eighth-place team after placing 68th overall and fourth on the team in a career-best 20:50. Becca Dyson also ran a career-best time of 20:57 for 79th place as the sixth Gopher in 2013.
The Gophers won the open/unseeded race at the 2013 Wisconsin adidas Invitational, led by Kaila Urick in a career-best 21:21 for sixth overall. Haley Johnson was 11th in a career-best 21:43, and Taylor Mikkalson was the fourth Gopher in 14th overall (career-best 21:55).
2013 Tori Neubauer Invitational Rewind
Chelsea Pettit took ninth overall to lead the Gophers to a second place team finish at the 2013 Tori Neubauer Invitational. She clocked a season-best 22:27.5 and was followed by Hannah Trasser (22:35.4) in 17th overall.
Up Next: Jack's Twilight Run
On Oct. 25, the Golden Gophers will host Jack's Twilight Run at Les Bolstad Golf Course. The 6K race is open to the public and will start at 6:30 p.m. This year marks the seventh annual race in honor of late Minnesota equipment manager Jack Johnson. Participation in the race is free, but donations are encouraged.
