The No. 23 University of Minnesota volleyball team fell in three sets to No. 5 Wisconsin, 25-16, 25-19 and 30-28, tonight. The Golden Gophers drop to 13-5 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten.
Sarah Wilhite hit .296 and had 10 kills in 27 swings, while Daly Santana had 17 kills and eight digs. Dalianliz Rosado had a team-high 13 digs. Katie Schau had 35 assists, while Alyssa Goehner had 11 digs.
Wisconsin lead the team categories as they had 47 kills to Minnesota's 38, out dug the Gophers 69-55 and held a 9.5-6.5 advantage in blocks.
Minnesota travels to Madison, Wis., to take on the Badgers at the Fieldhouse, Saturday, at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed on BTN Plus.
Set 1: Wisconsin used an early 9-3 lead to win the first set, 25-16. The Gophers closed the gap to 11-9 on a Badger attack error, but Wisconsin would increase its lead to 17-10 on a Gopher attack error. Minnesota would cut the lead to 20-15 on a block from Katie Schau and Molly Lohman, but the Badgers would put away the set with two kills, a Gopher attack error and an ace to end the set. The Badgers hit .286 to Minnesota's .081 in the set for the win.
Set 2: Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead on a 25-19 second set lead. The Badgers opened up the second as it did the first with a 4-0 lead to force the Gophers to take a timeout. The Gophers battled back to tie it at 6-6, but the Badgers opened up the set to a 14-8 lead to force the Gophers to burn its second timeout. Minnesota would attempt a comeback with a 4-2 run at the end of the set, including a solo block by Sarah Wilhite, but the Badgers closed out the set to go up, 2-0.
Set 3: Minnesota and Wisconsin went through 15 tie scores and seven lead changes, but Wisconsin took the set and the match with a 30-28 third-set win. Santana had seven kill in the set, while Wilhite had six in the set, while Rosado earned 10 of her 13 digs in the set as she moved into the libero position. Minnesota opened with a 4-1 lead in the third set. The Badgers came back to tie the set at 7-7 and would later take a 15-12 lead. The Gophers, however, erased a four-point deficit and tie the set at 18 on a triple block from Santana, Schau and Paige Tapp. Minnesota would later go up 23-22 on a Santana kill, but Wisconsin forced ties at 23 and 24. The two teams went back and forth before the Badgers closed out the set with two kills for the win.
