MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Golden Gophers hosted Wisconsin in the first conference dual meet of the season. The Minnesota women's team picked up another "W", and the Gopher men fell to the Badgers. The border-battle also included a tribute to seniors as well as a Hall of Fame induction for Jenny Shaughnessy Ferris, Paul Domer, Alex Massura and Laura Herman Brooks.
RELAY REPORT
The relay team of Tori Simenec, Kierra Smith, Becca Weiland and Lauren Votava posted the fastest time in the country in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:40.88.
In the men's 400 medley relay, the team of Carl Newenhouse, Conner McHugh, Nick Orf and Ryan Miksch tied for second with a time of 321.83.
Becca Weiland, Blake Zeiger, Tori Simenec and Lauren Votava combined for a first-place finish in the 200 free relay. The relay team had a time of 1:32.26.
Minnesota went 1-3 in the men's 200 free relay. Daryl Turner, Paul Fair, Ian Gordon and Ryan Miksch finished with a time of 1:21.60 for first.
DIVE IN
Jessica Ramberg finished in first-place in one-meter diving with a total of 304.88 points. Lexi Tenenbaum and Yu Zhou followed allowing the Gophers to go 1-2-3 in the event. Similarly, Minnesota took first, second and third on the three-meter board. Yu Zhou captured first with a total of 372.23.
Sophomore Matt Barnard swept the diving competition placing first on both the one-meter and three-meter boards. In both events, the Minnesota men went 1-2-3, with Manny Pollard placing second in both and junior Dylan Zoe placing third in each event.
DISTANCE FREE
Senior Kiera Janzen took home the gold in the 500 free for the Gophers. Janzen finished with a time of 4:50.54.
CJ Smith posted a 500 free time of 4:30.16 for third place. He was followed by teammate Erik Huft in fourth.
Again, Janzen placed first in the 1000 free, finishing with a time of 9:52.90. Junior Sam Harding finished in third place, followed by freshman Brooke Lorentzen.
Senior CJ Smith finished the 1000 freestyle in second place with a time of 9:11.00. Logan Redondo finished fifth with a time of 9:33.05.
SPRINT FREE
Senior Becca Weiland finished second in the 50 free behind Wisconsin's Ivy Martin. Weiland finished with a time of 22.87, followed by teammates Abigail Raatz and Blake Zeiger.
Sophomore Daryl Turner took first in the 50 free with a time of 20.58. He was followed by teammate Paul Fair who finished with a time of 20.93.
In the 100 free, Lauren Votava posted a time of 50.29 for second place. Tori Simenec and Blake Zeiger followed, allowing the Gophers to go 2-3-4 in the event.
For the men's side in the 100 free, Paul Fair placed second with a time of 45.74. Ryan Miksch finished third with a time of 46.60.
Minnesota went 1-2-3 in the 200 free. Junior Lauren Votava finished in first-place in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.49. Maddie Hoch and Jessica Plant followed.
In the 200 free, Ben Bravence finished third with a time of 1:39.54. Gophers Paul Fair and Erick Huft followed for fourth and fifth place.
BREASTSTROKE
Junior Kierra Smith swept the breaststroke events for the second dual in a row. In the 100 breast, Smith finished with a time of 1:01.48. In the 200 breast, Smith's time of 2:09.49 was nearly eight seconds faster than the second place finisher.
Freshman Conner McHugh put up the best Minnesota time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 56.89 for second place.
In the 200 breast, Jakub Maly finished with a time of 2:02.82 for second place followed by Conner McHugh for third.
BACKSTROKE
Freshman Brooke Zeiger swept the backstroke competition, placing first in both the 100 and 200 back. Brooke Zieger finished with a time of 56.37 in the 100 back, and had a 1:58.92 in the 200 back.
On the men's side, sophomore Daryl Turner finished with a time of 48.54 in the 100 back for first place. Senior Carl Newenhouse finished third with a time of 50.28.
In the 200 back, Carl Newenhouse finished second with a time of 1:47.98.
BUTTERFLY
In the 100 butterfly, senior Becca Weiland took home the gold with a time of 53.60.
For the men, sophomore Daryl Turner picked up his third individual win of the night placing first in the 100 fly. Turner finished with a time of 49.09.
Freshman Danielle Nack placed first in the 200 butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:00.98. Seniors Devin Ste Marie and Tori Simenec followed, allowing the Gophers to go 1-2-3 in the event.
Andrew Hartbarger finished with a time of 1:51.28 in the 200 fly for second place. Nick Orf and Viktor Bjoerk finished fourth and fifth consecutively for the Gophers.
IM
Freshman Brooke Zeiger picked up her third first-place finish of the night in the 200 IM. Zeiger finished with a time of 2:01.78.
Jakub Maly and Andrew Hartbarger led Minnesota to second and third place finishes in the 200 IM. Maly placed second with a time of 1:51.06.
